Let’s Stimulate the Economy!

Thursday, April 16th, 2009

Now that you’ve finished your taxes and gotten a good night’s sleep, it’s time to celebrate with a little (or a LOT) of good S.E.X. (by S.E.X., I mean “stash enhancement experience,” of course … but if you wish to enjoy the other kind, too, then by all means, ENJOY! :P ) at the online Needlework Show, which actually opened yesterday and runs through midnight on Monday, April 20th (but don’t wait until the last minute to place your order; please give the shop[s] you choose to order through plenty of time to order what you want for you).

Although the online Needlework Show is a wholesale show, so you’ll have to put together a list and give it to a participating shop to order for you, there’s not much better than being able to find out about the latest and greatest needlework patterns and products on the market — even while wearing your pajamas if you so choose! :)

Participating fully in the online Needlework Show is one of the most important things we stitchers can do to show our support for the designers, the shops, the manufacturers, and every other part of this industry we love so much.  Not only is it the absolute BEST opportunity we stitchers have to find out what is actually available in the needlework market, but this is also our chance to let store owners know exactly which of those available products we want and will buy if we can just get our eager mitts on them.

All other needlework markets are a guessing game for store owners, and all of those other needlework markets limit us stitchers, too — due to the fact that we may never get to see any number of designs and products that were offered, but that the shop owners decided not to purchase because they thought they might not sell. Since the online Needlework Show doesn’t just allow for but actually encourages stitchers’ input, it’s no longer a guessing game for shop owners as far as what they should buy.  As long as we stitchers do our job by looking through the online Needlework Show and communicating with the shop owners, a significant amount of the risk shop owners take on when they purchase products is actually eliminated — because we’ve already promised them what we’re going to buy.

In other words, it’s my opinion as a stitcher that it’s my obligation to check out this show each time it rolls around, and then to provide my wish list, suggestions, and so on to my favorite shops. This is something substantial I can do — all by myself! — to keep this entire industry in business.

I’ve also found the online Needlework Show is a superb opportunity to interact with many of the designers, most of whom seem to welcome being contacted by us stitchers, especially during this show, with questions, suggestions, compliments, etc.

You also won’t want to miss the large variety of opportunities to win or download free patterns or products.  These are available on various individual designers’ pages throughout the show, and also by completing the activities available on The Fun Page. Many of the contests can be entered daily, so make notes, and check back each day for more chances to win!

Unfortunately, my own actual local shop has so far refused to have anything to do with the online Needlework Show. (In fact, my local shop has pretty much refused to have anything to do with being online, and is pretty much in business only because she’s turned primarily into a yarn store. :( ) However, I still try to utilize the online Needlework Show each time it rolls around to help my local shop owner improve her business by stopping in to her shop to try to get her to at least take a look at the online Needlework Show — while I’m there in the store. I haven’t been successful yet, and I wouldn’t be being honest if I didn’t admit I’m really losing patience with her. I don’t buy much from her anymore because she simply refuses to meet my stitching wishes, much less my stitching “needs.” But I keep trying because I keep hoping perhaps she’ll change her mind … that perhaps if she’d just take a look at what’s out there, if she’d just listen to me as a customer, things might change for the better.

If your local shop isn’t one of the participating retailers in the show, you might want to try having a similar chat with them (and hopefully you’ll be more successful because hopefully your shop owner will be more open-minded). In the meantime, you still won’t miss out; there are plenty of participating shops to choose from to place your order(s). You can even spread the wealth if you want to by ordering from more than one shop!

So, what treasures have you discovered in this online Needlework Show? Come back here to Independent Needlework News and let me know what you’ve just GOT to have! :D

Also, let me know which shop(s) you chose to order from — and why?

Laurel, of Laurel’s Stitchery, is holding a big sale until midnight on Tuesday, November 4th. Orders of $20 (not including shipping) or less receive a 10% discount, while orders between $20.01 and $50 (not including shipping) receive a 15% discount. But why stop at less than $50 when orders of $50.01 or more (not including shipping) receive a 20% discount? :P These discounts apply even to items which are already on sale, so you really don’t want to miss this opportunity to increase your stash. Please note: Sale discounts are applied manually before credit card charges are processed; if you use PayPal, the discount will be refunded to your account.

Stitching Bits and Bobs’ Ooky Spooky Sale makes almost everything in Bobbie’s store 20% to 25% off — and all customers whose orders total $100 or more (not including shipping costs) will also receive the dinkydyessilk0bobbiesblossoms.jpggift of a skein of Bobbie’s Blossoms Dinky Dyes silk (made exclusively for Stitching Bits and Bobs). This sale runs until 10:00 a.m. eastern time on Tuesday, November 4th (at which point, all US stitchers’ priorities will freely change from stitching or shopping to voting! :D

Everything at Wasatch Needlecraft is 25% off through November 9th, which gives you plenty of time to snap up all the good stuff at the first two stores before leisurely finishing up at Wasatch. :D

Are you a shop owner who wants to advertise an upcoming sale to a large audience? Are you a stitcher who wants to help your LNS do better in these difficult times? If you know of a good sale other stitchers would appreciate, too, let me know about it, please, either by posting a comment, or by emailing me. (Give me as much lead time before the sale starts as you can; otherwise, it can be very difficult for me to find the time to make a post.)

Tracy, aka Teejay, is a stitcher in Phoenix, Arizona, USA who blogs at The Passion of My Needle.

Like so many of us stitchers who blog, Tracy’s goal is, “to inspire a love of needlework” … And as all of us stitchers who pursue our shared passion for the needle on the Internet, nothing inspires us more than seeing a design beautifully photographed — especially while in the progress of being stitched, when finished being stitched after we’ve watched it grow, and/or when framed or however it might otherwise be made completely ready for display or use.

The amazing variety of choices we needleworkers have today — in a world where hand-dyed fabrics and threads abound, in a world in which so many needlework designers encourage us to use their designs as a jumping off point for our own creativity and individuality rather than to simply follow their instructions to the letter, and in a world where the myriad choice of mats and frames alone can make the same design look entirely different — means we can see the same design stitched by fifty different needleworkers and it will be an entirely unique piece of artwork each time. Talk about inspiring!

But how can we make sure we don’t miss something?

Sigh. Okay … Realistically (unfortunately) it simply isn’t possible to catch everything, :( no matter how much we wish we could. But this is okay — really! In fact, it’s necessary. Otherwise, there would be no time for the other priorities in your life — namely stash enhancement and stitching! :D

So the real question is: how can we make the best choices in terms of what we do read? Each of us will, of course, be striving to find those particular things which are of the greatest interest and importance to us individually … But what we need to begin our individual searches is some reliable organization, which, until now, has been pretty much non-existent.

This is where Tracy comes into the picture. As part of her desire to share her love for needlework, she has decided to create what will be a tremendous resource for the worldwide needleworking community: a comprehensive and continuously current list of stitchers’ blogs!

To accomplish this extremely beneficial though huge task, Tracy needs your assistance:

Please contact Tracy with the information about your own blog (or any other stitching blogs which should be added to the list) by posting a comment with this information for her on Stitching Bloggers’ Links.

The only rules for inclusion in the Stitching Bloggers’ Links, per Tracy (”Other than that no one will be excluded”), are:

  1. all blogs submitted to be listed on Stitching Bloggers’ Links should have cross stitching to share ;)
  2. blog postings should be made at least monthly

Now I just have to find the emotional resources to start posting on my personal blog again so that I can be listed on Stitching Bloggers’ Links, too … I have all kinds of stitching and other creative pursuits to share when I do! :)

Puzzle Contest? Scavenger Hunt? Count Me In!

Monday, August 4th, 2008

Jen Funk Weber, of Funk & Weber Designs, is currently hosting a fun contest on her blog, Needle and ThREAD: Stitching for Literacy.

There will be at least two prizes. One will be a copy of Funk & Weber’s newest pattern (as yet a bit of a secret — that’s part of the contest ;) ). The other will be both the pattern and everything you need to stitch it (thanks to generous donations from Zweigart and Gentle Art Sampler Threads!) — a prize worth over $100! Jen has also hinted there may be even more prizes for contestants who put in good efforts in the contest — and as Funk & Weber Designs have always been very, very generous in their support for the Online Needlework Show (make note: the next show begins September 24th!), I’m personally guessing Jen will be sending out more than just two prizes because giving is in her nature. :)

The goal of the contest is, of course, to have fun. Secondarily, it is to reveal the name and subject of Funk & Weber’s newest design release. The possibility of winning some great products such as that new design is the icing on the cake! (I’ll admit it: I’m hoping to win something, even though I’m not really sure I qualify considering Jen asked me to help advertise the contest, but that’s okay, too, because it’s FUN!).

To get started, here are the posts on Jen’s blog you’ll want to focus on:

Funk & Weber Designs New Puzzle Pattern Contest

New Puzzle Pattern Contest - Day 1

New Puzzle Pattern Contest - Day 2

New Puzzle Pattern Contest - Day 3

New Puzzle Pattern Contest - Day 4

Final contest entries are due by 11:59 p.m. August 6th, Alaska time. (To check your time compared with Alaska’s, I recommend the World Clock.) Good luck!

By the way, Jen also has written a superb (and humorous — the best kind!) blog post about the problems the Orphan Works bill (recently mentioned on INN) will almost certainly create. Please read it, and if you have not already taken appropriate action, I again urge you to do so.

Lastly, and on a personal note, I am much later with this post than I had hoped to be due to the personal emergency of one of my dearest friends — a situation which has worried me terribly and made it very difficult for me to concentrate on much at all for days. For anyone who is inclined, I would appreciate it very much if you could please send good vibes, positive energy, prayers, or whatever you may call it toward the Colorado, USA area such that my friend may find strength in both mind and body, and that he may feel measurably more positive each day. Thank you.

Together, We Can Stop the Orphan Works Bill … And We MUST !!!

Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008

This is perhaps the most important post I’ll ever make, whether or not the most important and informative part of it is even written by me.

Deb Koch, owner of one of my favorite shops — Stitches ‘N Things in Fenton, Michigan — wrote about something immensely important (the necessity of stopping the Orphan Works bill now going through both the US Senate and the US House of Representatives) with as much passion and eloquence as I might. More importantly, she provided a very clear explanation of this complex issue. Rather than spend hours writing my own post on this, I simply asked Deb if I could reprint her words, with full credit to her as well as links to her site so you can see her original statement for yourselves.

So, with Deb’s permission, I am reprinting her cry for help here on INN in hopes of reaching and motivating even more stitchers to take action regarding this very, very important issue.

I BEG YOU TO HELP US SHOPS .. THE DESIGNERS .. THE NEEDLEART INDUSTRY! AND .. I NEED YOU TO DO THIS NOW !!

There are two bills being reviewed in the House and Senate as you read this. The bill numbers are H.R. 5889 and Senate Bill 2913. The organizations officially opposed to this legislation are the Craft & Hobby Assn., The National NeedleArts Assn., the Society of Decorative Painters, and a wide range of groups representing artists, designers, photographers, illustrators, and cartoonists.

To learn more about the harm the Orphan Works bills would cause our industry, click on this link.

To make it really easy for you to make your voice heard …

Contact your Senator in opposition to S.2913 NOW.

Contact your Congressman in opposition to H.R. 5889 NOW.

Because TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE … it would be better for you to CALL your representative or FAX them immediately. Don’t know who they are? Don’t know how to contact them? LOOK HERE …

Visit www.house.gov and find your House member’s email [Use the Find Your Representative by Zip link, OR the Write Your Representative link -- both are in the upper left corner of the page]. SEND Him/Her an email today with these simple words:

Please vote against H.R. 5889 – it will destroy my art!

Visit www.senate.gov and find your Senate members’ emails [Choose your state using the drop down box in the top right corner of the page]. SEND them an email today with these simple words:

Please vote against S.2913 – it will destroy my art!

It is very important to CONTACT your representatives NOW and tell them you oppose this legislation!

And .. TELL YOUR FRIENDS TO DO THE SAME … TODAY!

WHY SHOULD YOU DO THIS??? This bill will directly impact YOU in that there will be FAR fewer charted designs, if any. It impacts me because I won’t be able to buy the designer’s works because why would the designer produce when their designs can be so easily taken? They won’t. This will really impacts the artists! It will impact me as a shop. It will impact you when you can no longer find new work to stitch.

Thank you so much for taking timeout of your day to read this and for taking the 2 MINUTES it will take to contact your Representative about this issue!

Don’t Let Congress Kill Creativity -
Help Stop the ORPHAN WORKS BILL -
ACT NOW

I can’t say what Deb has any better than she already has … But I will ask you to do one more thing if you have not already contacted both of your Senators (there are two for each state, so be sure to contact both of them!) and your Congressman …

Close your eyes and imagine a world in which there simply isn’t any new stash at all.

Think about how much we stitchers talk to each other (on YahooGroups, through blogs, on bulletin boards, etc.) specifically about new releases, and contemplate what will be left to talk about if there are no new releases. It really isn’t much of a stretch to think that much of our communication with each other will end because it will become more and more difficult for people to find out what a certain older chart that someone else is talking about looks like. Sure, we’ll still appreciate seeing other people’s work and trying to trade for their charts for a while … but it’s likely the communities we’ve built will slowly drift apart.

When there are no new charts to support the business, how will this affect the manufacturers who produce the items we need to stitch — the fabric, the hand-dyed fabric, the threads (cotton, silk, hand-dyed, etc.), the beads, the frames, and so on? It’s almost guaranteed that some of those manufacturers will go under in a world in which there are no new designs being produced.

Even if all the manufacturers are somehow still around, where will we purchase everything we need if the shops are going out of business?

Oh — clearly, there would be little to no reason for INN to continue to exist.

Okay, open your eyes.

It sounds like a nightmare, doesn’t it? The scariest part is that there is a real potential for this nightmare to become a reality if we don’t act, and act quickly.

It literally takes only a few minutes to call your Senators and your Representative, or to email them, or to write them a letter which you then fax and/or mail (especially because you can copy/paste Deb’s message into an email or a document … and you can probably copy/paste your Senators’/Representative’s address into a document, too! :) ). Heck … why not spend all of ten minutes to do what I did: call, email, fax, AND mail them your thoughts on this issue?

Please, please, please … This is WAY too important to ignore, or to wait to attend to … so please take action now.

THANK YOU !!!
