Get It While the Getting Is Good … Or Not

There isn’t much I’ll recommend going to a Walmart for, because I firmly believe Walmart is one of the great evils of the USA, but this is one of those rare occasions … though I do suggest calling ahead first to see if it’s even worth your while, or the gasoline the trip will take.

Apparently most Walmart stores in the US are dropping their entire line of DMC floss if they are located anywhere near another large craft store (such as AC Moore, Ben Franklin, Hobby Lobby, or Michaels), and so they are selling out of their current stock at just $.10 a skein — that’s a pretty good deal these days, even if you live near an AC Moore who still has 20 skeins for $1 sales fairly regularly.

Some customers are being told this is in fact not a sale in preparation for discontinuing DMC floss, but that $.10 is actually Walmart’s new regular price on DMC floss and that Walmart intends to continue carrying this item. I suppose the truth remains to be seen, and in any case, the story is still news.

If Walmart does actually intend to continue carrying DMC floss at the price of $.10 per skein, then it is certainly a plan to drive those above-mentioned craft stores we all know and love, if not out of business, then to at least drop their entire lines of DMC floss … At which point, Walmart will have us all over a barrel, will follow its usual course as does any monopoly, and will be able to raise the price on floss to the same ridiculous amounts our European sisters pay for it. So … if this floss sale lasts more than a very short time with stock being replenished, I would then caution you very strongly once again to buy from Walmart only at your own risk.

Regardless, the news has been in circulation for at least 24 hours already (sorry — I’m behind!), so call ahead to make sure your local Walmart(s) still have any DMC floss left and are actually selling it off at the $.10 per skein price — if they even stocked it to begin with, as many never did.

Eh, DMC is cheap enough at ACMoore or Michael’s that I can’t see the point of going to Walmart just for that. I mean, $0.10 vs $0.20 or $0.25 is really not much compared to, say $1.50 for specialty threads. Then again, Walmart’s simply not that convient to me, and I’m not a thread collector.

If the Wal-Marts that now have DMC at 10¢ a skein right now follow the same route as a few stores that had their DMC at 10¢ a skein a couple years ago, then they’re clearancing out their cross stitching department and will no longer carry any cross stitching supplies.

I didn’t ask any employee at our store if they were clearancing it out or if it was just on sale, but FWIW, the SKU labels on the bins are marked in red, and going by other merchandise in the store, red labels = clearance prices as opposed to sale prices.

    Howdy everyone!
I did go to a Walmart the other day to purchase the DMC threads.
Now, reading the above articale~ the cashier did say that DMC was not being discontinued. But did not elaborate on it.
You could say that .10¢ a skein is a buy of a lifetime…..is Walmart now going against their “honest american values” to take advantage of us stitchers? Would DMC actually allow for the price to be pushed to ureasonable prices thru Walmart?
    Thanks, Carol

Do not support Wal Mart at any price. We have a new super Wal Mart and they no longer have a craft area. So look forward to them discontinuing crafts in all their stores in the next several years. Crafts are a low profit margin and high labor cost. This does not meet the Wal Mart model. So please go to your local craft store and supprot them even if the prices are a little higher.
